The Man stands in a pool of light on the stage. He is an actor. We know this because he tells us so, but also because our past experience tells us that this is what actors do. He appears to be intelligent but this might just be clever direction. There is a huge gap between what we assume and what we actually know. And the more he tells us, the less we think for ourselves. We are truly in the dark. Who do we think he is?
